When you register for this event you will be added to the Think Forward Educators email list.

Reading Reconsidered - Building Background Knowledge

This session will explore Teach Like a Champion's latest guidance on reading pedagogy with a practical look at building knowledge to increase reading comprehension.

Participants will learn about four key tools that allow for strategic and purposeful use of background knowledge:

1) embedded non-fiction texts

2) embellishments

3) knowledge organisers and

4) vocabulary as knowledge

If you are someone who knows the importance of building background knowledge but are not sure exactly how or where to start, or just want to see it in action, then this session is for you. You'll see some fantastic footage and walk away with some classroom ready actions.

Jillian Robinson

Jillian Robinson is a teacher and an experienced educator who believes wholeheartedly that teaching is a team sport. Jillian has performed a variety of roles in schools, including classroom teacher, learning support teacher, Head of Curriculum, Head of Teaching & Learning, Reading Mentor and Regional Pedagogy Coach. For the past 4 years she has operated JR Coaching & Consulting in Education.

The majority of her career has been spent working in schools that are socially disadvantaged, and this has been a strong driver for Jillian to always look for the best possible practice available to support students regardless of their background. This quest led her to discover Teach Like a Champion (TLAC) in 2012. A highlight of her career to date has been working with Doug Lemov and the TLAC team, with two visits to the USA in 2014 and 2017.

This relationship has continued for over a decade and Jillian now proudly presents TLAC's Reading Reconsidered training in Australia. Her current work includes all things TLAC (and its relationship to the Science of Learning) and a passionate interest in the Science of Reading and Knowledge-Rich curriculum.
