The Great Teaching Toolkit: An evidence based approach to improving school-wide education outcomes
If we want to improve education outcomes for a generation of children, probably the best thing we can do is incrementally raise the quality of everyday teaching in every lesson for every pupil. Even tiny and slow changes in effectiveness would make an enormous difference across a system, provided they are sustained and cumulative.
Helping teachers to become even more effective is mainly about teacher learning: teachers gaining knowledge, understanding, insights, intuition, skill, techniques and habits. Crucially, teacher learning is just like every other kind of learning, so clarifying the curriculum - what is worth learning to get better at - is fundamental. The Great Teaching Toolkit: Evidence Review, published in June 2020, presents the latest and best available evidence about what great teachers do that makes a difference. Teacher learning also depends on feedback - rich, insightful, actionable feedback that helps teachers to focus on the things that matter, to see how well they are doing, what they are improving and what they can most usefully work on.
In the last year we have been building a suite of tools to support teachers and school leaders in making incremental, steady but irreversible gains in the effectiveness of their teaching: the Great Teaching Toolkit. It is a collaboration between teachers, school leaders and researchers, developing courses, instruments, systems, resources and a community to promote genuine and sustainable professional growth.
In this talk I will describe what we are doing and why, what we have achieved so far, what we still need to do, and how you can get involved.
