A crash course in pedagogy for surviving and thriving in the English classroom - Rebecca Birch
In this session, Rebecca Birch hosts a crash course for early career English teachers on how to create cultures of writing and reading in the classroom. Drawing on evidence-based practice, Rebecca will share key strategies to support teachers in making writing routine, including the direct teaching of writing structures that enhance learning, and the modelling and scaffolding of responses. She will also present on how to support students in reading comprehension, while providing an appropriate level of challenge. Finally, she will present on the structures and resources that can support early career teachers in doing their job, for example effective use of aides, strategic programming and efficient whole class and individualised feedback.

Rebecca Birch
Rebecca Birch is a teacher of English and Head of Humanities at an independent, top 50 school in Sydney. She worked as a learning support officer in a range of settings while she undertook her teacher training, after a successful career in advertising and fashion. She is a strong proponent of evidence-based practice and has experience with students who bring a wide range of capabilities to the classroom. She is a thought leader in her field with a passion for sharing her expertise in the area of pedagogy in English.
